Wives
of the 19 northern states’ governors under the auspices of the Northern
Governors’ Wives Forum (NGWF) have expressed their resolution to
promote the enrolment, retention and completion of girls in schools “who
still lag behind” in terms of education compared to their southern
counterparts.
Speaking Tuesday during
the opening ceremony of the Northern Governors’ Wives Conference held
at the Yankari Games Reserve in Bauchi, the host and wife of the Bauchi
State governor, Hajiya Hadiza Mohammed Abubakar, noted that women in the
region share similar socio-economic problems such as illiteracy and
poverty, hence their resolve to complement the efforts of their husbands
to surmount the problems.
“It
is sad that women and girls suffer rape and different kinds of abuse
on daily basis in the society. Therefore all hands must be on deck to
stop the menace,” she said.
According
to her, the objective of the forum is to support the activities of the
office of the wife of the president, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, and complement
governments’ programmes to improve the plights of women and girls who
are vulnerable members of the society.
She said the forum is currently working on women empowerment, infant health, girl child education and child abuse, among others.
