Speaking with newsmen at Mfum on the Nigeria-Cameroun border on the influx of migrants from Southern Cameroun into Nigeria, following the crisis in the area, the Babandede said: “For now, we are not prosecuting any people. You know we are migration managers; we don’t want to look at it at the criminal side.
“We are doing our best to see how to solve the problem, in terms of refugee management, without much detention and if there are problems, we have adequate friends and other law enforcement available.
“You don’t need to have a separate screening and if there is a criminal case that requires us to give them to the Police, we will give them to the Police. But migration management is not more of by force; we manage it with respect to human rights and dignity.”
He added: “The two countries can live peacefully together. Mr. President is aware of this efforts being done by the two countries to make sure that they live peacefully, so I assure you, I am here on a fact finding and what I see is a great cooperation on our side.
“Our own law enforcement, the Customs, Immigrations, civil defence, road safety, and all other security agencies are working together as a team. “I will like to see similar cooperation between us and Cameroun collectively.”
Babandede said over 40, 0000 refugees are expected to flood into Nigeria following the crisis in Southern Cameroun, saying Governor Ben Ayade has assured of his commitment to invest in the security of the state to ensure his people are safer and ensure that migrants, who are also of the same relation with the people in Cross River, were protected.
